There are times when certain files in your computer become undeletable because of some virus or any other reason. This means that the file cannot be deleted by simply clicking the delete button. Files usually become undeletable because of an active process that has an open handle to the file which prevents it from being deleted. Under most circumstances if you close down all running programs you’ll find that most files will then be free to delete, but that’s not always the case, and in some cases it may even be a trojan or other form of malware that’s preventing itself from being deleted. Now some undeletable files may not harm your computer but usually these type of undeletable files cause problem in proper functioning of an operating system. In this post am going to give some computer help and will share with you different ways of getting rid of such stubborn files :

Method 1

  1. Open command Prompt window and leave it open.
  2. Close all running (active) programs.
  3. Click Start > Run.
  4. Key in “TASKMGR.EXE” (without quotes) in the Run window.
  5. Go to the Processes tab.
  6. End process Explorer.exe.
  7. Leave the Task Manager open.
  8. Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory in which the undeletable file is located in.
  9. In the command prompt type “DEL <filename>”  (without quotes) where ‘filename’ is the file you wish to delete.
  10. Now go back to Task Manager.
  11. Click on File > New Task.
  12. Enter “EXPLORER.EXE” (without quotes) to restart the GUI shell.
  13. Close Task Manager.

And thats it ! You have deleted the file safely. Visit the directory in which the undeletable file was located to verify that the file has been deleted.

Method 2

  1. Open Notepad.
  2. Click on File > Save As.
  3. Locate the folder where the undeletable file is located.
  4. Choose “All files” from the file type box.
  5. Click once on the file which you wish to delete so its name appears in the “filename” box.
  6. Put a ” at the start and end of the filename (it will overwrite it).
  7. Click on save.
  8. It will ask you to overwrite the existing file, then choose yes.

Now after doing so just locate the file and delete it as you delete any other file. The file will most probably be deleted.

Method 3

  1. Click on Start > Run.
  2. Type “command” in Run dialog box.
  3. Go to the directory in which the undeletable file is located. [type: cd c:\xyz (xyz stand for your folder)]
  4. Once you are in the folder in which the non-deletable file is. Type in “dir” (without quotes) a list will come up with every file inside.
  5. Now delete the file by entering the file name.

If you cannot access the folder because it has spaces. For example, Program Files, in this case you will have to type only the first 6 letters then put a ~ and then 1 without spaces. Example: cd c:\progra~1\

An example of how to delete the file using command prompt: If your file name was temp jerry.bmp you would type once in the specific folder thorugh command, del tempje~1.bmp and your file should be gone (Make sure to type in the correct extension).

NOTE: This method may not work for all types of files especially virus files. I therefore suggest you to first use Method 1 and Method 2 first.

Method 4

If the above mentioned 3 methods fail, then just download this free utility. It will surely help you in deleting undeletable files. Moreover it’s also very useful when you have to delete virus file. This utility marks file for deletion and during next reboot. This method is based on documentation from Microsoft that describes a function called MoveFileEx.

You can download the freeware directly from their site DelLater.

As a Microsoft’s Windows user, i am very fond of Bill Gates. He is the mastermind behind the immense success of Microsoft as a OS giant. However, being a human, he too has had his share of failures and not so popular predictions. Following is the list top 6 failed technology predictions made by Mr. Gates. Have a look at ‘em :

640Kb of memory will be enough for everyone

640kb of memory, after reading you might be laughing. Well don’t laugh, it is true. In 1981, Bill Gates reportedly said that nobody would ever need more than 640 kilobytes of memory on their personal computer. Contrary to what Gates thought, most computer’s be it laptop or destop, today come with at least 1GB of memory. Imagine, what if his prediction was true and we did stuck with 640kb of memory.

Operating System 2 will be the programme of all time

In a foreword to the OS/2 Programmer’s Guide in 1987 Bill Gates wrote,

I believe OS/2 is destined to be the most important operating system, and possibly programme, of all times.

This Operating System although gained some ground in large industries like banking, insurance and telecommunications it, however, it failed to make an impact among the home and other domestic users. The launch of Windows 95 completely stole the OSes thunder. OS/2 is no longer marketed by IBM, and IBM standard support for OS/2 was discontinued on 31 December 2006. And after that Microsoft’s own XP took over the reigns of 95 and is now installed over a majority of computer’s all over the world.

Bill gates

Spam problem will be over

As promised by Bill Gates in January 2004, the problem of spam e-mail messages will be gone within two years. Clearly the menace of spam is far from getting over instead it has been growing at an immense pace. In fact, spam accounts for 14.5 billion messages globally per day. In other words, spam makes up 45% of all emails.

Microsoft will never make a 32-bit OS

In 1983, Bill Gates said,

The company will never make a 32-bit operating system.

However, nine years later, Microsoft released beta of its first 32 bit Windows NT. NT was the first full 32-bit version of Windows. In 1995, Microsoft released Windows 95, which featured new user interface, supported long file names and could automatically detect and configure installed hardware (plug and play). The OS could natively run 32-bit applications, and featured several technological improvements that increased its stability over Windows 3.1. And again, in 2005, Microsoft released 64-bit versions of Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003, now dubbed Windows XP Professional x64 and Windows Server 2003 x64. Currently, Microsoft’s most popular XP packs both 32 and 64-bit versions. Less-popular Vista also comes in both versions. And now windows 7 is ready to launch in both versions.

Blu-ray Disc will be the last physical format (media)

In the year 2005, Gates amused the world with one another forecast that failed miserably. In an interview to a newspaper, Gates said

Blu-ray Disc is the last physical format there will ever be.

Here’s what he said in the interview,

Well, the key issue here is that the protection scheme under Blu-ray is very anti-consumer and there’s not much visibility of that. The inconvenience is that the [movie] studios got too much protection at the expense consumers and it won’t work well on PCs. You won’t be able to play movies and do software in a flexible way. It’s not the physical format that we have the issue with, it’s that the protection scheme on Blu is very anti-consumer. If [the Blu-ray group] would fix that one thing, you know, that’d be fine. For us it’s not the physical format. Understand that this is the last physical format there will ever be. Everything’s going to be streamed directly or on a hard disk. So, in this way, it’s even unclear how much this one counts.

Contrary to what he said in the interview, the Blu-Ray has beaten HD-DVD to death, its successor are on way including multi-layer discs (LS-R), 3D discs that may hold up to a terabyte of data and discs read by short wavelengths such as UV.

Tablet PC’s will be most popular

In the year 2001, Bill Gates had said that tablet PC would be the most popular form of PC sold in America. At an event in Las Vegas, Gates showed a prototype Tablet PC and following year launched it. He said,

It’s a PC that is virtually without limits and within five years I predict it will be the most popular form of PC sold in America.

However, Tablet PCs failed to make an impact. Only a few handful vendors market Tablet PCs. Also, they are still to take off as business devices.

Microsoft’s new operating system Windows 7 is on the verge of Worldwide launch and Microsoft has great expectations from their latest venture. I, like others, am also satisfied with the new operating system except for the fact that Microsoft failed to implement some expected error messages. A few of the new error message’s that should have been taken under consideration during the development of the Windows 7 are :

windows error

  • Smash forehead on keyboard to continue.
  • Press any key to continue or any other key to quit.
  • BREAKFAST.SYS halted… Cereal port not responding.
  • Close your eyes and press escape three times.
  • File not found. Should I fake it? (Y/N)
  • Runtime Error 6D at 417A:32CF: Incompetent User.
  • Enter any 11-digit prime number to continue.
  • Bad command or file name! Go stand in the corner.
  • Windows message: “Error saving file! Format drive now? (Y/Y)
  • Windows VirusScan 1.0 – “Windows found: Remove it? (Y/N)

Now that one cannot see Microsoft implementing these error messages in their current version, I Hope they impliment it in upcoming version ! ! !

P.S – Hope you enjoyed the humor…….

When we think about reducing power consumption of our systems, we believe it’s typically possible through more efficient hardware. Improvements in manufacturing allowing for die shrinks is a clear way to reduce power consumption, but there’s also something that software can do. Infact software plays consistent role in energy saving. Microsoft, Operating system giant, claims that Windows 7 will be better than Windows XP or Windows Vista in power management.

Microsoft quotes,

“With Windows 7 we’ve gone a lot further, focusing on core innovation to enable energy efficiency, when both in use and in idle mode, And not only have we focused on the OS, but we continue to be engaged directly with our hardware and software partners to continue to improve the efficiency. The whole world is looking at being more energy efficient, and with Windows 7, we’ve taken some strong steps on delivering that from an OS perspective.”

Windows 7

Windows 7 now manages hibernation and standby modes more reliably and efficiently, thus now users would likely be more inclined to use those features rather than leaving the computer on all the time. Furthermore, new IT management and troubleshooting tools are built into Windows 7 to help improve power management. These tools will also help diagnose devices and applications that are causing power issues. The upcoming operating system is also smarter in power management when idle. Katz said that Windows 7 is better able to manage power saving at times even between keystrokes, which should not only reduce the electricity bill but also stretch laptop battery times.

Elliot Katz also said, “PCs are idle for long amounts of time and short amounts of time, and idle efficiency is critical because that’s where you gain a lot of power savings, When it’s one of those days where you have lots of meetings and you forget to bring your power supply, these kinds of features really help your battery go a lot further.”

With this being said and Microsoft on the verge of releasing windows 7 to consumers, lets see whether they are able to help our detiorating environment or not !

The clash of the Titans continues, as Microsoft announced that it will soon be launching Microsoft Office 2010 which will feature broadcast and video editing in PowerPoint, new data visualization capabilities in Excel, and co-authoring in Word.

For a detailed list of Microsoft Office 2010 features refer to this post :

Microsoft Office 2010 Unleashed

Microsoft is testing a new version of its market-leading productivity suite for Windows PCs that will tie-up with new Web-based Office. The applications offered by Microsoft will be similar to those offered by Google including a suite of lightweight online applications.

Google’s online spreadsheet and office related applications has been gaining popularity. To counter that Microsoft plans to take Office online, with a new series of free Office Web applications.

“Office Web Applications, the online companion to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote applications will allow you to access documents from anywhere. You can even simultaneously share and work on documents with others online,”  says Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview Website.

Google vs MS Office

It will be an ad-supported web-suite, which will be available to more than 400 million Windows Live consumers at NO extra cost.

Google has been struggling to match the reputation of Microsoft office, as its own suite failed to perform up to their expectation. But Google is offering free version of this suite, thus attracting more than 15 million customers. Since then Microsoft has been under pressure to provide more free applications. Microsoft is also set to announce the launch of its internet-based operating system, called Azure. This will see it give tough competition to Google in the business of selling computing resources over the internet and by allowing developers to buy capacity to run their applications based on the amount of storage, bandwidth or any other resources that they use.

Microsoft has also announced that it will reduce the number of office editions from 8 to 5. The Microsoft Office suite will be available in the first half of next year.

Yes ! You read it right.

For the past year or so, there have been numerous rumors about the features, launch dates, etc of Microsoft’s latest office suite.
However, nothing was know before its official launch today at its Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans. The Microsoft officials have confirmed that Office 2010 will be released by the first quarter of 2010.

They also have made a mini-movie about there latest venture.
Check out that video below :

The Movie

Official Teaser

Here’s a summary of all the functionality that has been added in this release :-

PowerPoint 2010 :
PowerPoint has been upgraded with a new browser version. Users now have the capability of editing video and images within PowerPoint with a basic video editing tool and an image editing tool, which is like a basic, simple version of Adobe Photoshop. Microsoft has also added the ability for users to launch a WebEx-like live sharing feature with other users. So if you create a slideshow in PowerPoint, you can share it with other people in real-time.

Excel 2010 :
Excel spreadsheets can now run in the browser, and similar to PowerPoint, spreadsheets can be published to the browser via the desktop version. The browser version of Excel has limited features, but offers more in-depth functionality than Google Spreadsheets. Microsoft has added a particularly innovative feature called Sparklines, which gives a visual snapshot image of a data trend over time within a cell. You can also share Excel via the browser with other users and set special permissions on who can access the document.

Microsoft office 2010

Word 2010 :
Microsoft has introduced a new feature called “document fidelity”. This means that, in the browser, documents retain the same look and feel as in the desktop. The browser version still has the “ribbon user interface,” where you can change fonts, size, formatting, styles etc. Microsoft has also updated the desktop version to have collaborative features so that multiple users can be editing a document at once.

Outlook 2010 :
Outlook 2010 now has a ribbon user interface, like Word, PowerPoint and Excel. The UI of email conversations has been upgraded to look almost like a message tree, allowing users a more visual view of sent and incoming emails. Search functionality has been improved as well, making it much easier to find content. Also, you can preview calendars in emails and choose to ignore selective email conversations.

To sum up, the improvements seem to be good and the software promises to be a complete package.
However, nothing can be confirmed till it is released.

After 3 Release Candidates, Mozilla finally released the final version of its much hyped browser on Tuesday (IST).

If you are using Firefox 3.5 RC3, you don’t need to download or install this final version as both are absolutely same, as no such change log is available to make any comment about it.

However, you will still get an ‘update available’ message screen !As claimed by Mozilla, their new browser is “more than twice as fast as Firefox 3, and ten times as fast as Firefox 2″

Mozilla has always committed to what they have said and lets hope that this time also it proves to be the same !!
