Nokia released yet another Firmware update for Nokia 5230. The previous version for the update was v 20.0.005 and it has now been updated to v 21.0.004. While performing a software update from the device itself, i found this update marked as ‘important’. The description of this update didn’t provide much details, all it said was, “Improves phone performance and brings you the latest features”. The update isn’t a bulky one instead it’s just 3158 kB (i.e 3 MB Approx.)
After updating to the latest firmware, i didn’t notice any major changes. Though, the first thing i noticed was, the Touch Screen Vibration intensity has been reduced. Other than this, there wasn’t any noticeable change. I will recommend all the Nokia 5230 users to update to this latest firmware as soon as possible. The firmware updates are there for a good reason and it’s better to keep your device updated in order to enjoy all the features.
Screenshots of Update:
No official Change Log has been posted by Nokia yet (Or any email regarding such update has been received by me). However, i will try to get one and post it here as soon as possible. If you have already updated to the latest firmware then do share with us any changes that you noticed after upgrading to FirmWare version 21.0.004!
UPDATE: No official change log yet but some of the noticeable changes (as seen by readers and me) were:
- The thumbnail’s appear at a much faster pace especially of big video files,
- Kinetic scrolling is even more smooth (As per on of the reader),
- More responsive accelerometer,
- “More” option in Ovi Maps, recommends you services (For me it shows Map Reporter),
- Ovi Maps updated from v 3.00 to v 3.04 (Reason why the green signal bar disappeared!)

my phone says that update phone software… pls someone tell me that how would i do my phone update??? my version no. is 50.0.001
Connect your phone with pc in ‘Nokia Ovi Suite’ mode and from Ovi PC suite check for software update. If any update is available it’ll ask for your permission to update it.
I DONT HAVE INTEGRATED GPS OR A GPS ON MY NOKIA 5230
Nokia 5230 has Integrated GPS (A-GPS). Ovi maps makes use of that for navigation.
Hey, Since I updated to version 21.0.004, am facing issues with my touchscreen wherein I have to press a menu item twice or maybe more to open the same. Anyone else facing the same problem? Do we have a resolution to the same? Also what is the compatible In-car holder version for Nokia 5230?
Happens with me occasionally. Not a big issue i guess. I believe that Nokia 5230 requires yet another firmware update. It needs one IMO.
hello, i am facing few problems with my Nokia 5230… it is restarting when i try to create a new profile… the screen goes into many colors and then switches off and again starts… another problem is that when i check for software updates it doesnt show the “Phone software” update… it just shows few useless software updates….
my firmware version is 21.0.004…….plz help.
Try to hard reset your phone (Backup data before). Most of the time the problem gets resolved via hard reset. And regarding phone software update, it’ll show only when a new phone update is available. If you want to re-install phone software just use ovi software updater.
Ya i guess. I heard there is problem like getting restarted, in previous versions. In my version 20 it restarted like 4 times in 2mths.I Read in some other forums that there mobiles are getting restarted like in every few hours of usage particularly when they use message service or changing themes. Do you have any idea on this. What about this version did you came across with this bug? Did your phone got restarted ever?
You read that right. I, too faced similar problems. Besides restarting without any apparent reason, Nokia 5230 also hanged a lot. In this update all those problems have been fixed but, am seeing some other problems viz. The clock on home screen disappears, touch screen becomes unresponsive but media key works and minute graphic problems.
Thanks for saying. I better wait for next release. I am happy with present version. I am not in a stage to see new hiccups. Being Nokia this is their downside for smart phones @ low range compared to high end.
You never know when are they gonna push the next update. And its true low end phone by Nokia are not that great but they are the only one’s in market which provide’s value for money mobile phone’s.
Better touchscreen scrolling and responsive accelerometer

Hi..
Updated the new version but except for the lower vibraton level nothing different about this version.
I hope the new version gives out a video callig feature for Nokia 5230
Video calling feature requires front camera which is not present in Nokia 5230, 5233. So, it’s just not possible
As per your comment on video calling as you said you need a front camera as per my knowledge on mobiles i think there is no need to have a front camera to make a video call. for example consider E63 it doesn’t have a front camera but we can make a video call instead. I hope Nokia comes up with a software version which support video calling to 5230 as it is having 3G.
Without front camera, how will you see the caller with whom you are video calling? Does it make sense to have a one way video chat?
Yes, its a good point. My bad, hmmm then why do E63 have a video calling feature?? Is that true?
Nokia E63 doesn’t have a front camera as in case of Nokia 5230. So, you’ll have to choose between either seeing the caller or transmitting your video call! You must have mistaken E63 with some other mobile phone.
Post update – I found everything good except that in GPS/OVI-MAP, the gps signal-bar is missing (The one which was showing green-yellow bars for signal strength. Anybody else is facing the same?
Which bar are you talking about? Can you be more specific, share a pic maybe.
You also updated the map program from v.3.0 to v.3.04. It’s a feature, that the gps signal icons dissappear.
@tet Thanks for the valuable input
@SIDH4U Hope this solves your issue.
after updated my device, i notice that the accelometer is more responsive…
For me kinetic scrolling works better now in this new FW. This FW is OTA only, if you are trying to update through NSU you are out of luck.
Thanks for your input. And this update (i believe) is also available in the new (beta) NSU.
Yes this update is available in Ovi suite. The file is much larger to download 120MB approx
Are you sure about the download size because FOTA update was of only 5 MB (approx).
Yes i am sure. I don’t know whats happening with this update coz there is no official change log yet.
This was just a “Minor” update. So no changelog has been publicaly released. And i still don’t think the update is available via PC suite.
Here are the SS of OVI suite

Thanks for sharing the screenshots
And it seems Nokia has bundled the update with previous version thus the size 128 MB.
