Install Android 2.2 (Froyo) On Samsung Galaxy 5 I5500/I5503, Without Rooting!

I have had a chance to play with Samsung Galaxy 5 I5503, a Google Android 2.1 running device. Unfortunately Galaxy 5 I5503 hasn’t qualified to get Froyo update (Android 2.2) although it should have, no compatibility issues. Anyway, I was determined to get Android 2.2 running on my Galaxy 5 and was successful too! A big thanks to Samfirmware for Android 2.2 firmware for Galaxy 5 series phones (I5500/I5503).

The process to install (I know this tutorial is a bit late) and get Android 2.2 running on your Galaxy phone is very easy. Just follow the following mentioned points in order and your mobile phone will soon enjoy all the features of Android Froyo update!

Files You Need To Have Before Installing Android 2.2:

Process To Flash Your Samsung Galaxy 5:

  1. You must have downloaded all the files mentioned above and have them ready to use.
  2. Backup all the contents of your phone memory with KIES or using Mobile Back Up II (available for free on Android App Store).
  3. Reset your phone to factory settings (Not compulsory but advised).
  4. Make sure the battery is fully charged up.
  5. Switch Off your Galaxy 5 (I5503/I5500). Remove battery and re-insert after a few seconds.
  6. Press the following buttons together:
    • Volume Down Button + Center Home Button (Big square) + Power Button
  7. Wait for “Downloading” screen to appear. Once this screen comes up release the buttons and connect your phone with computer using original data cable.
  8. Now wait for your computer to install device driver (until it shows “the device is ready to use”). In the mean time extract the I5500LUYJP2.rar file which will give you a I5500LUYJP2 folder with I5500LUYJP2.tar file in it.
  9. Now open ODIN Downloader (downloaded above), if the phone connection is successful the box under COM Port Mapping will turn to yellow. Select the following check boxes (as shown in screenshot below):
    • One Package, Auto Reboot and Protect Ops check-boxes.
    • Select the Ops file (downloaded above).
    • Select the tar package downloaded above.
  10. Cross check the settings and hit “Start”.

Galaxy 5 Custom Firmware

That’s it! In approximately 5 minutes your device will restart and boot into Android 2.2 with beautiful icons and lot many new features icon smile

If you face any problem then do leave a comment below, I’ll try my best to answer it to the best of my knowledge.

In case you mess up or something stuck for you then download the original firmware for Samsung Galaxy 5 I5503 using this link and follow the exact steps from point number 5. This should restore your device back to Android 2.1.

Note: This process is based on my personal experience and since every device is different hence you are on your own while flashing your device. I, or any other author of TechVorm will NOT be responsible for any loss caused due to this. However, I’ll be happy to help you if need be.

Regarding unanswered queries and making a tech blog, I’d say, I have put up this tutorial after trying it out and the same has worked for many readers. And it’s not just about this tutorial, there are many other tutorials present on this blog.

About owning and maintaining a blog, my dear friend, I am trying to share something useful with readers. If you think that the information here is not up-to the mark then instead of criticizing and discouraging other interested readers, I’d say poke around some other portal and spam their comment section.

First flash your phone with android 2.2 and then follow this guide. This is a common problem. And usually it takes 2-3 minutes to finish with flashing.

  • melanie

    Hi paritosh,
Is it at all possible to get the telstra samsung galaxy 5 GT-I5503T stock firmware. I put cyanogen mod on it following your guide but I misunderstood and assumed that titanium backup would let me restore my stock firmware if I decided I didnt like the cm7, but it seems to only restore apps not whole firmware. I am getting hassled by my daughter as the foxtel will no longer work so I would love to restore the stock firmware. I appreciate any help you can give me.
    Regards
    Melanie

  • Lans Rosales

hey, can you give me a working link to the froyo firmware, ill try it before going to 2.3 coz that how the other guys did it when they experienced problem with installing 2.3 right?

  • http://www.techvorm.com Paritosh

Shouldn’t be happening. Did you disconnect your device during this process? Normally the phone restarts within 2-3 minutes.

As for a solution, first Factory reset your device and then try to install Froyo. I can’t guarantee that it’ll work but it’s worth a shot :)

  • http://www.techvorm.com Paritosh

    Follow the guide here: http://www.techvorm.com/install-android-2-3-7-gingerbread-on-samsung-galaxy-5-i5503i5500-step-by-step-guide.html
It installs Android 2.3 on your GT I5503, on the same lines as Cyanogen mod. And I’ll try to update the link for original firmware soon :)

  • http://www.techvorm.com Paritosh

    Try this guide: http://www.techvorm.com/install-android-2-3-7-gingerbread-on-samsung-galaxy-5-i5503i5500-step-by-step-guide.html
It installs gingerbread i.e Android 2.3.

And regarding links, I’ll try to update it soon enough. Till then flash your phone using the above mentioned link :)

Hard reset your phone and see if the warning message disappears.

  • Sarathi

    Hi,
I have tried this steps and successfully got upgraded to 2.2 froyo version from 2.1, but have facing some problem after this, its showing warning message every 1min like “Sorry! The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly!. Please try again.”
Can u please suggest me what i have to do now?

    Thanks,
    Sarathi.

  • http://www.techvorm.com Paritosh

Flash again and DO NOT disconnect your device (in the middle of the steps) until the above given process is complete.

  • http://www.techvorm.com Paritosh

Flash again and see if the problem persists. This usually happens when the boot loader gets corrupt.

  • shivu

    sir,,it shows samsung and again samsung,but don’t start,,please help me,,i m waiting,plz!

Try flashing your samsung galaxy with the newer version viz. 2.3.7 i.e Gingerbread. I wrote a guide here: http://www.techvorm.com/install-android-2-3-7-gingerbread-on-samsung-galaxy-5-i5503i5500-step-by-step-guide.html

A lot of readers have complained about this problem. Though I did not get this particular problem but since majority of them are expressing their concern over the same, I guess this is a common issue. All I can suggest is to format your device and then see if problem persists.

The link to original firmware is mentioned in the article above. It isn’t an image file. You to put the files individually in “Select Images To Load”.

  • manoj

now 2.2 is working properly but some function not working like GPRS .so when i download orginal frimware .in which image file is not there by which flashing is not started. pleae give me a proper link for orginal frimware of 5503

  • http://www.techvorm.com Paritosh

That’s because it was flashed with Android 2.2 firmware of I5500. Android 2.2 is not available for I5503. And after installing this new firmware, reset your phone to get rid of this error.

  • manoj

and process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly..pls try again

    3. Tap on 1st tab and select “English”.
