According to wikipedia, GPS is :

A U.S. space-based global navigation satellite system. It provides reliable positioning, navigation, and timing services to worldwide users on a continuous basis in all weather, day and night, anywhere on or near the Earth which has an unobstructed view of four or more GPS satellites.

GPS or Global Positioning System can be used for many varied purposes. From providing you with turn-by-turn directions on a map to measuring time with great accuracy. Every individual may use GPS differently. For example, an adventurer may use GPS for hiking a trail or off-road travelling, a sports-person may use it to track its movement on field, a regular consumer may use GPS for directional purposes, etc. For every such individual, different varieties of GPS devices/GPS mobile phone’s are available (Which i am not going to discuss).

In this post i am going to share with you some key features to look for while buying a GPS device/GPS mobile phone. Here goes the list :

1. Type of Device

If you primarily use car as a means of transport, a PND (Portable Navigation Device) might be a better choice. But if you use walking, public transport or other mode of traveling then a GPS Phone is more portable.

2. Maps Coverage

The GPS device should have maps according to your needs. If you require the device while travelling outside your own country then make sure the maps have an international coverage too. On the other a regular national traveler should buy devices with national coverage only.

3. Map Updation

New buildings, motels, hotels, etc are being built regularly. Therefore it is important that you have the latest maps on your device so that you don’t miss out the recent constructions. Before buying a GPS device, ask how frequently the maps are updated. Having the latest maps is crucial to a good navigation experience.

4. Size

Size is the key. Choose a device that is small and doesn’t cause you difficulties while carrying it. You do not want a bulky equipment to be carried around while traveling, so smaller size is always preferable. Besides, majority of navigation devices these days are small in size comforting the user.

5. Battery

Buy a device that has long battery life or comes with a backup battery. No one prefers a device that runs out of power in the middle of the journey. Most GPS devices use 2, 4, or 6 ‘AA’ batteries, which can last up to 6 hours. GPS devices with integrated rechargeable batteries are the ideal choice if you occasionally lose track of time.
